How to Check EPF Balance and Download Your PF Passbook

Your provident fund balance is not in a bank app. It sits against a 12-digit Universal Account Number, the UAN, on the EPFO member portal. After the UAN is activated you can view every establishment linked to it, the monthly contribution, and the interest, and you can download the passbook. The passbook is a statement. It is not itself a withdrawal.

Check EPF Balance

  1. 1

    Find the 12-digit UAN

Check the salary slip, or use Know your UAN.

  2. 2

    Activate it in UMANG

Website activation is closed. Use UAN Activation in the UMANG app.

  3. 3

    Open the passbook login

    passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/login

  4. 4

    Download every ID

Each old employer is a separate member ID under the UAN.

Latest month missing
Employer may not have filed it

Passbook
A statement, not a withdrawal

Open every member ID

The balance of a previous company does not always show on the first passbook you open.

What you need before you start

  • UAN allotted by your employer
  • Mobile number seeded against that UAN
  • Aadhaar, PAN, or member ID if you are activating the UAN for the first time

Find the UAN if you do not remember it

The UAN is on your salary slip and on the PF SMS some employers forward. If you cannot find it, open the EPFO member portal and choose Know your UAN. That button is on the home page. EPFO adds a one-time security token to it, so a saved deep link stops working. The page asks for the mobile number seeded with EPFO, and then a member ID, Aadhaar, or PAN. The UAN comes by SMS to that seeded mobile.

If the mobile on the PF account is an old company number, ask the employer to seed your current mobile before you try. There is no official way around that OTP.

Check the balance on the member portal

  1. 1

Activate the UAN if this is the first login

UAN activation on the member website has been closed. EPFO now does it in the UMANG app: UAN Services Through Face Auth, then UAN Activation. You need the UAN, Aadhaar, and the Aadhaar mobile for the OTP and face check. Skip this if you already have a password.

  2. 2

Use the UAN and password. The portal may also offer an OTP login. Do not reuse a password you use for email or net banking.

  3. 3

    Open the passbook login

Go to https://passbook.epfindia.gov.in/MemberPassBook/login and sign in with the UAN and password. A passbook opens for each Member ID linked to the UAN. Select the establishment you want. The page shows the employee share, the employer share, and interest.

  4. 4

    Download the PDF

Use the passbook download on that page and save the PDF. The figures change after the employer files the next contribution and after EPFO credits interest, so an old download is only a snapshot.

Check it in the UMANG app

UMANG is the government app that includes EPFO. Install it from the Play Store or the App Store. Open EPFO, then View Passbook. Sign in with the UAN and the OTP on the seeded mobile. The figures are the same as the website. This is the easier path on a phone.

If the passbook is empty or short

  • The current month often appears only after the employer files the ECR. A missing latest month is usually a filing delay, not a lost balance.
  • A previous company sits as a separate Member ID under the same UAN. Open each ID. The home screen total is easy to misread if you only open one.
  • KYC pending, especially Aadhaar, can block a clean passbook view and will block a claim. Approve pending KYC in the member portal.
  • Two UANs from two employers split the balance. Ask the current employer to merge them. Do not create a third one.
  • Interest for the financial year is credited later, often well after March. The passbook can look “short” until that credit shows up.

This guide is only the balance check. Withdrawal, transfer, and pension claims are separate forms on the same portal, and a wrong claim type delays the money. Read the claim screen before you submit one.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check my PF balance online?

Log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN and open View Passbook, or use EPFO inside the UMANG app. Both show the employee share, employer share, and interest.

I do not know my UAN. How do I find it?

Check the salary slip or use Know your UAN on the EPFO member portal with the mobile number your employer seeded. The UAN is sent by SMS to that number.

Why is last month’s contribution not in the passbook?

The passbook updates after the employer uploads the monthly return and EPFO processes it. Ask the employer whether that month’s ECR was filed before assuming the amount is missing.

Is the passbook PDF enough to withdraw PF?

No. The passbook is a statement. Withdrawal is a separate claim on the member portal and needs completed KYC, including Aadhaar and a bank account in your name.
