DigiLocker

How to Download Aadhaar, PAN and Other Documents from DigiLocker

DigiLocker is the national document wallet run under the Ministry of Electronics and IT. Documents it pulls from a department are digitally signed. Recruitment forms, passport applications, and transport services increasingly ask for that copy instead of a photograph of a laminated card. A file you upload yourself is only a scan. It is not the same thing.

Fetch it. Do not upload a photo.

A form that says DigiLocker wants the issued document, not a picture you added yourself.

What you need before you start

  • A mobile number you can receive OTP on
  • Aadhaar, if you want issued documents that the department releases only after Aadhaar OTP
  • The document number the issuer asks for, such as PAN, driving licence number, or roll number

Create the account

Open https://digilocker.meripehchaan.gov.in/signin. Sign up or sign in with your mobile number and OTP. Use your own number. A locker opened on a cyber-café phone is not something you can recover later. After login, open Issued Documents. That screen is available only once you are signed in.

Set the PIN or password the screen asks for. You can add Aadhaar so issued documents can be fetched. That step also uses an Aadhaar OTP.

Pull an issued document

  1. 1

    Open Issued Documents

After login, go to Issued Documents and choose to pull or fetch a document. Stay out of the Uploaded Documents section for this. Uploads are just your own files.

  2. 2

    Search the issuer

Search for the department. UIDAI issues Aadhaar, CBDT or the Income Tax Department issues PAN, state transport departments issue driving licence and vehicle RC, and education boards or universities issue marksheets and degrees if they are connected.

  3. 3

    Enter the ID and OTP

Type the number the issuer asks for and the extra detail, often date of birth. Confirm the OTP if one is sent. The document is stored in the locker when the issuer recognises the details.

  4. 4

    Download or share

Open the document and download the PDF. For a form that wants a DigiLocker share, use the share option and set an expiry if the screen offers one. Send that link, not a photo of your screen.

Issued document versus a file you uploaded

If a portal says “fetch from DigiLocker”, it wants the issued copy. Uploading a photo into DigiLocker and then attaching that photo does not meet that instruction.

When a document will not appear

  • Aadhaar: the mobile on Aadhaar must receive the OTP. Update the mobile first if it does not.
  • PAN: your PAN should already be linked with Aadhaar.
  • Driving licence or RC: the number and date of birth must match the Sarathi or Vahan record. A hyphen or an old licence number is a common miss.
  • Marksheet: the board has to be on DigiLocker. Some older years were never digitised by the board. In that case the locker cannot invent the certificate.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar and the issuer record stops the pull. Correct the source document, then try again.

Frequently asked questions

Is a DigiLocker document legally valid?

Issued documents fetched from the department are digitally signed and are accepted as valid electronic copies under the Information Technology Act. A scan you uploaded yourself does not get that status.

How do I download Aadhaar from DigiLocker?

Sign in, open Issued Documents, fetch Aadhaar from UIDAI, and confirm the Aadhaar OTP. Then download the PDF from the locker. You can also download it directly from myAadhaar.

DigiLocker says no record found. What should I check?

Match the document number and date of birth with the original certificate, and make sure the name agrees with Aadhaar. If the issuer has not published that record, DigiLocker cannot fetch it.

Can I share a document without sending the PDF?

Yes. Open the issued document and use the share link. Set an expiry when the option is there, and send the link only to the office that asked for it.
