PAN

How to Download PAN Card (e-PAN) Online

There are two different jobs people mix up. If a PAN is already allotted, you only need the PDF again. If you have never had a PAN, instant e-PAN can allot one from your Aadhaar. Using instant e-PAN when you already have a number will not give you a second card. It will tell you a PAN already exists.

Reprint the PAN you already have. Instant e-PAN is only for a first-time allotment.

What you need before you start

  • Your PAN, if one is already allotted
  • Aadhaar linked to that PAN, for the free download on the e-Filing portal
  • The mobile number on your Aadhaar, because both portals send an OTP there

Download e-PAN from the Income Tax portal

This is the path for a PAN you already have. Linking with Aadhaar should already be done. If the portal blocks the download, link Aadhaar first using the guide below.

  1. 1

    Open the e-Filing portal

For a PAN that was just allotted from Aadhaar, open https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/instant-e-pan and use Check Status / Download PAN. If you have forgotten the e-Filing password, use the Protean or UTIITSL download page linked above instead of the portal home.

  2. 2

    Find Download e-PAN

On the dashboard, open the e-PAN download under the profile or quick links. The label moves occasionally. Use the portal search for “e-PAN” if you do not see it on the home screen.

  3. 3

Confirm with OTP and save the PDF

The portal may send an OTP to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. Download the PDF. The page or the email tells you the password. For many e-PAN files it is your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, for example 05031998 for 5 March 1998. Use the hint on the download page if that does not open the file.

Reprint through Protean or UTIITSL

Protean eGov (the service people still call NSDL PAN) and UTIITSL are the two entities authorised to reprint a PAN. Use this when you cannot log in to e-Filing. Reprint is a paid service. The fee is shown before payment and is collected only on that official site.

  • Protean e-PAN download: https://www.onlineservices.proteantech.in/paam/requestAndDownloadEPAN.html
  • UTIITSL e-PAN download: https://www.pan.utiitsl.com/PAN_ONLINE/ePANCardHome
  • Keep the PAN, Aadhaar number, and date of birth ready.
  • Physical PAN reprint: https://www.onlineservices.proteantech.in/paam/ReprintEPan.html
  • A physical card, if you asked for one, arrives later by post. The PDF is enough for almost every form.

Pay only on eportal.incometax.gov.in, onlineservices.proteantech.in, or pan.utiitsl.com. A search ad that promises a “free PAN card PDF” and then asks for a card payment is not the income-tax department.

Instant e-PAN, only for a new PAN

Instant e-PAN allots a PAN from Aadhaar if three things are true: you do not already have a PAN, your Aadhaar has a mobile number, and the name, date of birth, and gender on Aadhaar are correct. It is free.

On the e-Filing portal, open Instant e-PAN before login. Enter Aadhaar, confirm the OTP, check the details that come back from Aadhaar, and submit. If any detail is wrong, cancel and correct Aadhaar first. A PAN allotted with a wrong date of birth is painful to fix later.

If the service says a PAN is already mapped to this Aadhaar, you already have one. Note that number and use the reprint path.

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a PAN card that was issued years ago?

Log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal and download e-PAN, or use the paid reprint on Protean or UTIITSL. Instant e-PAN is only for people who have never been allotted a PAN.

What is the password of the e-PAN PDF?

The download page or the email states it. Many e-PAN files use your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. If that fails, use the password hint shown by the portal that sent the file.

Is instant e-PAN free?

Yes. Aadhaar-based instant allotment on the official e-Filing portal is free. Reprinting an existing PAN through Protean or UTIITSL is a separate, paid service.

Why can’t I download e-PAN even though I have the number?

The usual reason is that PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, or the Aadhaar mobile is not active. Link them on the e-Filing portal, then try the download again.
