Voter ID
How to Check Your Name in the Voter List
Your name has to be on the electoral roll of your constituency before you can vote or download a voter ID. The Election Commission search is free. You can look yourself up with the EPIC number printed on an old voter card, or with your name and your father’s or husband’s name if the card is missing.

Check Name in Voter List
- 1
Open the roll search
electoralsearch.eci.gov.in — search is free.
- 2
Search by EPIC or details
EPIC number, or your name plus a parent or spouse’s name.
- 3
Match the right row
Check the relative’s name, age, and gender before you stop.
- 4
Note part and serial
The booth officer looks up these two numbers on polling day.
Remember
- Name missing
- File Form 6
- Spelling or photo wrong
- File Form 8
- You have shifted
- File Form 8
You can vote only if
Your name is on the roll of the constituency where you live now.
What you need before you start
- EPIC number if you already have a voter card, or your name as it may be spelled on the roll
- Father’s or husband’s name, age or year of birth, and gender
- State and district. The assembly constituency helps, but you can search without it
Search the electoral roll
The public search sits at electoralsearch.eci.gov.in. The wider voter-service site is voters.eci.gov.in. Either official Election Commission page is fine. Ignore sites that ask you to pay to “check voter list”.
- 1
Choose how you want to search
Search by EPIC if you know the voter ID number. Search by details if the card is lost. Details search needs your state, and then your name plus a relative’s name.
- 2
Fill in the form
For an EPIC search, enter the number exactly, including letters. For a details search, select the state and district, enter your name and your father or husband’s name, and choose gender. Add the assembly constituency if you know it. Leave it blank if you have shifted and are unsure.
- 3
Submit the captcha
Complete the captcha and search. If nothing comes back, try once without the district or with a shorter form of the name before you assume you are not registered.
- 4
Match the right row
Several people can share a name. Match the relative’s name, age, and gender. The matching row shows your EPIC number, part number, serial number, polling station, and constituency. Note the part and serial. Those are what the booth officer looks up on polling day.
How to read the result
- EPIC number: the voter ID. You need it to download e-EPIC.
- Part number and serial number: your place inside the booth’s roll.
- Polling station: the building where you vote. It can change, so recheck before an election.
- Assembly and parliamentary constituency: the seats you are enrolled under.
- A different district than the one you live in now usually means you shifted and the roll was not updated.
If your name is not in the list
A missing name does not always mean you were never registered. Spelling, a married name, or an old address are the usual causes. Try the relative’s name with one spelling change, and search the state without locking the constituency.
- Never registered, or you recently turned 18: file Form 6 on voters.eci.gov.in for a new voter ID.
- The spelling, age, photo, or address is wrong: file Form 8 for a correction.
- You have shifted house: file Form 8 so the entry moves. Do not keep voting from an address you left.
- You believe a wrong entry should be removed: Form 7 is the objection form. Use it carefully. It is not the form for adding your own name.
- You can also search and file forms in the official Voter Helpline app published by the Election Commission.
You must be 18 or older on the qualifying date for the roll. A Form 6 filed before you are eligible will not add the name. The portal shows the qualifying date while you apply.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check my name in the voter list without a voter ID number?
On electoralsearch.eci.gov.in choose search by details. Enter your state, name, father’s or husband’s name, gender, and age. The result shows the EPIC number if you are already on the roll.
Which is the official website?
Use electoralsearch.eci.gov.in to search the roll and voters.eci.gov.in for forms and e-EPIC. Both belong to the Election Commission of India. The Voter Helpline app is the official mobile app.
I shifted to another city. Will the old entry still appear?
Yes, until you file Form 8 and the new constituency accepts the shift. Search with your old district if the new address shows nothing. Then file the shift so you are enrolled where you actually live.
What should I do if the spelling of my name is wrong?
Submit Form 8 on the voter portal with the correct spelling and a supporting document such as Aadhaar or a marksheet. Correction is not the same as a new registration.
