How to Update Aadhaar Card: Name, Address, Mobile and Date of Birth

You can correct Aadhaar from home when your registered mobile still receives OTP and you have a clear photo or PDF of the supporting document. Fingerprints, iris, and photograph always need a visit. If the old mobile number is gone, online login will not work and the centre is the right route.

Visit a centre
Lost mobile, photo, fingerprints
When it is done
Download a new e-Aadhaar

Never share the OTP

Only UIDAI and its enrolment centres can change Aadhaar. A shop that asks for the OTP is not official.

What you need before you start

  • Aadhaar number and the mobile number registered on it, for an online request
  • A supporting document for the field you want to change, in the format the portal asks for
  • The original document plus a photocopy, if you are visiting an enrolment centre

What you can update, and where

Name, gender, and date of birth can be changed only a limited number of times. Address can usually be updated again when you move. The portal tells you whether another online change is allowed before it takes payment. If it refuses, the centre can still take the request with your biometrics.

Online versus a centre visit
ChangeOnline on myAadhaarAadhaar centre
AddressYes, with an accepted address proofYes
Name, date of birth, or genderYes, if UIDAI still allows another change and the proof matchesYes
Mobile or email, old number still workingYes, by verifying the old and the new numberYes
Mobile, old number lostNoYes, with biometrics
Photo, fingerprints, or irisNoYes

Documents that are commonly accepted

Upload a document from the list the portal shows for that field. A file that is cropped, blurred, or over the size limit is the usual reason a request comes back rejected.

FieldProof people normally use
NamePassport, PAN, voter ID, marriage certificate, or a gazette notification
Date of birthBirth certificate, 10th marksheet, or passport
AddressPassport, voter ID, ration card, a recent utility bill, bank statement, or a registered rent agreement
GenderPassport, birth certificate, or another proof listed on the portal
Mobile and emailNo document if both numbers can receive OTP. A centre visit if the old mobile is unavailable

The name and date of birth on the proof should match what you type in the form. If your marksheet says “Anitha” and you type “Anita”, the request is likely to fail.

Update Aadhaar online

  1. 1

    Log in on myAadhaar

Open https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/du/en, enter your Aadhaar number, and verify the OTP sent to the registered mobile.

  2. 2

    Open the update request

Choose Document Update or Update Aadhaar. Select only the field that is wrong. Updating several unrelated fields in a hurry makes a rejection harder to understand.

  3. 3

Enter the new detail and upload the proof

Type the value exactly as it appears on the document. Upload a colour scan or photo in the file type and size shown on the page. Check that all four corners of the document are visible.

  4. 4

    Review and pay if asked

Read the preview. Demographic updates are chargeable. The current fee is on the payment page. Pay there with UPI, card, or net banking. There is no official agent you need to pay separately.

  5. 5

    Save the Update Request Number

After submission you get an Update Request Number, usually called the URN. Keep the SMS and a screenshot. You need it to track the request.

Check the update status

On myAadhaar, open the status check and enter the URN along with the captcha or OTP the page asks for. Many online requests finish within a few days. UIDAI asks you to allow up to about 30 days before treating it as stuck.

When the status says the update is complete, download a fresh e-Aadhaar. An old PDF saved on your phone will still show the previous address or name.

  • Accepted: wait for the status to turn complete, then download e-Aadhaar again.
  • Rejected: read the reason. It is often an unclear document, a name that does not match, or a document UIDAI does not accept for that field. Correct it and submit again.
  • No change after 30 days: check the URN once more, then raise the request through myAadhaar or visit a centre with the URN and the same original document.

When you should go to a centre

Book a slot or walk in to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Carry the original proof and a photocopy. The operator will scan the document and take your biometrics. You still receive a URN. Do not leave the slip behind.

This is the path for a lost mobile number, a new photograph, or a fingerprint update. It is also the path when an online request keeps getting rejected.

Only UIDAI and its enrolment centres can change Aadhaar. A shop that offers “Aadhaar update in one hour” and asks you to share the OTP is not an official channel. You can refuse and do it yourself on myAadhaar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I update my Aadhaar address from home?

Yes, if your registered mobile receives the OTP and you can upload an accepted address proof such as a passport, voter ID, recent utility bill, or bank statement. Submit it on myAadhaar and track it with the URN.

How do I change the mobile number if the old SIM is lost?

Online login depends on the old number. Visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with your original identity and address proof. The operator updates the mobile after biometric authentication.

Is there a limit on name or date-of-birth changes?

Yes. UIDAI allows only a limited number of changes to name, gender, and date of birth. The website shows whether your Aadhaar can take another online change before you pay.

How long does an Aadhaar update take?

Online document updates often finish in a few days. Allow up to about 30 days, then check the URN on myAadhaar. Download a new e-Aadhaar only after the status says the update is complete.

What is a URN?

The Update Request Number is the acknowledgement UIDAI gives when you submit a change. Keep it. The status page on myAadhaar uses that number to show whether the request is in progress, accepted, or rejected.
